Febi Bilstein 37587 – timing chain tensioner

The Febi Bilstein 37587 timing chain tensioner is the part responsible for keeping the timing chain under constant tension while the engine runs. Correct tension prevents the chain from skipping on the sprockets of the camshafts and crankshaft, which directly affects correct valve timing.

Application

The part fits, among others, engines fitted in the Chrysler PT Cruiser and in Mini Cooper and One models of the R50, R52 and R53 generations. It replaces the original catalog numbers Chrysler 04693261AB, 04693261AC, Mini (BMW) 11 31 1 485 401, 11 31 7 510 736, 11 31 7 510 801, as well as equivalents used in Fiat, Jeep and Dodge (55226613, 68174426AA). Before buying, compare the OEM number with the old part, because the same engines were fitted in several body and market versions.

Why replace the tensioner

A stretched or damaged timing chain is very often the result of a worn tensioner rather than the chain itself - the tensioner loses hydraulic sealing or wears mechanically, causing the chain to rattle, especially on a cold engine right after starting. Ignoring this symptom leads to the chain skipping a tooth and incorrect valve timing, and in extreme cases to valves contacting the pistons. Febi Bilstein is a German manufacturer of OE-class replacement parts, supplying components to workshops and sales networks across Europe.
