Febi Bilstein 48387 - timing chain

The Febi Bilstein 48387 timing chain is a single-row (Simplex type) metal chain that transmits drive from the crankshaft to the camshafts. The chain has 138 links and is made to the G53HR/G53HC specification used in BMW and MINI engines with a chain-driven timing system.

Application

The part fits selected engines installed in the BMW 1 Series (F20, F21) and 3 Series (F30, F31, F80) and in MINI models: Paceman (R61), Countryman (R60), Hatchback (R56), Convertible (R57), Clubman/Clubvan (R55), Roadster (R59) and Coupe (R58). It corresponds to the original BMW/MINI part numbers, including 11 31 8 618 318, 11 31 7 533 876 and 11 31 1 439 853. Because BMW and MINI share an engine platform, before buying compare the OEM number with the marking on the old chain.

When to replace the timing chain

A stretched timing chain shows up as a characteristic rattle when starting a cold engine, fault codes related to valve timing and uneven engine running at idle. It is worth combining the chain replacement with a check of the guides and tensioner, because they wear at a similar rate, and a new chain fitted on old guides quickly loses its service life.
