Kolbenschmidt 77998600 - camshaft bearing set

The Kolbenschmidt 77998600 camshaft bearings are a set of shell bearings that seat the camshaft in the cylinder head. The shells let the camshaft turn freely with minimal friction, ensuring even lubrication and maintaining the correct working clearance between the camshaft and its seats in the head.

Use

The set includes 12 shell bearings, which is a full set of bearings for the camshaft in a typical cylinder head. Kolbenschmidt is a German manufacturer of engine components (part of Rheinmetall Automotive), specializing in shell bearings, cylinder liners and pistons supplied both to car factories and to the aftermarket. Because of the precise dimensional tolerances of the shells, the correct set must be matched to the specific engine - before buying, compare the catalog number and dimensions with the old shells.

When to replace camshaft bearings

Worn camshaft shells show up as a metallic knock from the cylinder head, a drop in oil pressure and, in extreme cases, camshaft seizure. Accelerated wear is most often caused by insufficient lubrication - oil changes that are too infrequent, a low oil level or oil of the wrong viscosity. The bearings are replaced during a cylinder head overhaul, usually together with an inspection of the camshaft itself.
