The K&N 69-8613TS Typhoon intake system is a free-flowing, mandrel-bent aluminum tube air induction system designed to fit certain Scion xB and Toyota Matrix models. The restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing are replaced by the K&N Typhoon intake system, which is designed to significantly reduce airflow restriction by smoothing and straightening it. This allows the engine to breathe in more air than with the factory intake. More air means more power and acceleration available throughout the engine's rev range. The 69-8613TS air intake includes a black, high-flow K&N air filter with a black heat shield, which mounts in place of the previous air box. Air is directed through the intake tube to the engine's throttle body, providing a guaranteed power increase. The intake tube has an attractive, durable silver powder coat finish and accommodates the factory mass air flow sensor and breather hose. The oversized, cone-shaped air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before requiring service, depending on driving conditions. This intake system is relatively easy to install, usually in 90 minutes or less, using the existing factory mounting points. The tools needed are a few screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set and wrenches. Some Typhoon intake systems are not legal for sale or use in California and other states that adopt California emissions standards, while others are CARB exempt and legal in all 50 states.
